Fuck You, Kobe – A Poem

Preface: I moved to Los Angeles from the Bay Area for a boy who promptly dumped me and kicked me out of our apartment. Being alone wasn’t so bad until the Warriors’ went for the record the same night as Kobe’s last career game. This is my ode to that.    It’s approaching 6:30, almost time to pack up and head home- only it doesn’t feel like home and I don’t want to go there. And the warriors are playing, and I should be excited, only I’m alone, and don’tRead More

An Open Letter to Los Angeles

I am the biggest sucker for sunsets, and Los Angeles particularly seemed to know that. My first time there was enough to have me stumbling over, in love. The term “takes my breath away” has always been a cheesy one. Walking into the sunset is clichéd. But that was exactly what LA was – sheer beauty – and no other way to describe it. LA punched me, slapped me – enamoured, enthralled me. I gazed with glassy eyes over sunsets brighter, bloodier than any I had ever seen. I stumbledRead More

Ten of the Most Beautiful Book Stores

If you’re like me and go gah-gah over books then you’ll enjoy the beauty of these book stores from around the world. BBC did their research and I’m ready to jet set around the world for some visits. Here they are, in no particular order: 1. Polare, Maastrict This store in the Netherlands operates out of a 700 year old Dominican church. It is absolutely beautiful from the entrance to all the way through.   2. El Ateneo, Buenos Aires This building was originally built as a theater in 1919.Read More

Baby falls 3 stories; saved by mattress Earlier this week in Burbank, CA a child fell 3 stories but was luckily saved by a stranger and his box spring mattress. Konrad Lightner spotted a toddler hanging from a third-story window and called the police. Miraculously, Lightner happened to have a mattress with him and placed it next to the apartment complex. He waited for the child to fall, caught him, and both collapsed onto the mattress. The toddler is doing fine with now, with apparent signs of trauma. Lightner explained,Read More
If you live anywhere east of California, you know where to go to feel good in the morning, or any time of the day for that matter. Where the coffee is fantastic, the donuts are savory, and everything is amazing. If you don’t believe in heaven on Earth, then you haven’t visited a Dunkin’ Donuts. Let me speak on behalf of all Californians in saying, what are we paying taxes for if there’s no Dunkin’? Currently, there are only 2 Dunkin’ Donuts locations in Southern Cal – Barstow and Oceanside.Read More
Last spring I got out of the Marine Corps and decided to go on a road trip to enjoy all the freedom I had been busy fighting over for the last five years.  I’m not sure what a country with no Air Force or Navy or any hostile Army at all has to do with American freedom, but that’s what I was told.  I was originally going to go solo, but I ended up taking my little sister along.  I initially said “hell no” when she asked, but I thoughtRead More

Indian Wells: A Sports Fan’s Oasis

Have you ever dreamed you were hanging out with your favorite athletes? That you were essentially in their world? So close, you can feel their quickness, agility, and ungodly talent. So close you can see and hear their interactions with teammates and opponents. Use your imagination. Pretend there are 20 basketball courts lined up next to each other, and there are All-Star players practicing at each one. Lebron plays one-on-one with Paul Pierce. Next to them, Kevin Durant and Damian Lillard play some horse. Oh, and Blake Griffin is tryingRead More

I’m cold, you guys. OK. Yes. It’s warmer than it was last week but I’m still going to complain because it’s January and there is a lot of winter left on the horizon.  If you’re in California and warm — but hopefully not on-fire warm — then you’re not invited to my circle of self-pity and I’m not talking to you. For the rest of us, here is a tasty, wintertime way to drink alcohol, so we don’t lose all will to live when it’s April and still snowing inRead More
