First Listen: You Won’t Stop Listening to Neon Trees “Songs I Can’t Listen To”

Though their third studio effort Pop Psychology may be just over a year in the past, alt-pop band Neon Trees aren’t ready to take a break just yet. This June, the Provo, Utah quartet will embark on their aptly-titled “An Intimate Night with Neon Trees” tour, during which they will be playing a series of small venues across the US.

And since their latest hit single “Sleeping with a Friend” has long since faded from the airwaves, Tyler Glenn and company have decided the best way to mark the occasion is with a smattering of new music beginning with the single “Songs I Can’t Listen To.”

In one of the band’s fiercest surges of rock sweetness, the track deals with the emotional resonance music can have over our lives, particularly how it can be tied to ex-lovers and unearth all the baggage they leave behind. It features a heavier guitar hook than fans have come to expect from the artists that brought them “Animal” and “Everybody Talks,” but the change is welcome. It’s fast, heavy and urgent without abandoning the pop sensibility that shot them to the top of the charts years ago.

Check out “Songs I Can’t Listen To” below and don’t miss the chance to hear it live at one of Neon Trees’ upcoming tour dates.
