FIRST LOOK: “Guardians of the Galaxy” Trailer Promises Bright New Future for Marvel Universe

Late last night, the world got a taste of the next chapter in the Marvel saga, and it’s a wild a departure from the clash-and-bang comic book adaptations we’ve come to expect.

“They call themselves the Guardians of the Galaxy.”

Forget the Avengers, this August a new team of superheroes will be raiding both the megaplexes and your pockets.  Led by Peter Quill (the Parks and Rec scene-stealer Chris Pratt), or Star-Lord as he’d like to be known [“you know, the legendary outlaw…?  Forget it”], these intergalactic misfits include the likes of Gamora (Zoe Saldana), a green-skinned femme fatale; the horrifically roided-out Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista); an armed-to-the-teeth raccoon named Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper); and Rocket’s Ent-like bodyguard Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel).

Directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy adapts Marvel’s 1990 cult comic, a grungy mix of sci-fi and comedy that feels like the antithesis of the chrome-plated heroes in the first wave of Marvel films.  The characters aren’t the instantly recognizable cash-cows of the Avengers and are generally unknown to anyone outside the comic book crowd.  It’s Marvel Studios’ biggest roll of the dice yet, but with a star-studded trailer this rife with humor and flashy special effects, the late-summer crowd may be willing to dish out a pretty penny on it.

Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters Aug. 1 and also stars John C. Reilly, Benecio Del Toro and Glenn Close.  What do you think of the trailer?  Let us know in the comments below.
