And The Derby Winner Is…Mint Mutiny!

Kentucky Derby weekend! You know what that means—bets, big hats, and adult beverages. Now, typically Derby weekend is associated with the well-known, bourbon-based Mint Julep, but thanks to celebrity chef Hugh Acheson and Captain Morgan rum, this year there’s another drink in town. It’s called the Mint Mutiny, it features my favorite type of liquor, and it tastes like love and summertime.

After mixing a glass up for myself this afternoon, I’d like to assure my friends that there will be plenty of Mutiny coming their way this weekend…and probably all summer long.

I’m not joking when I say it tastes like love.

Here’s how it’s made:

Mint Mutiny

Mint Mutiny

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon fresh mint, torn into pieces
  • 1½ ounces Captain Morgan White Rum
  • ½ ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • ½ ounce Rose Water-infused Simple Syrup**
  • Club Soda
  • 1 mint sprig
  • 1 cucumber spear

Directions:

Fill a julep glass with crushed ice. Stir in the torn mint. Add the Captain Morgan White Rum, lemon juice, Rose Simple Syrup, and then fill with club soda until the glass is almost full.  Top the glass with a mound of more crushed ice and garnish with a cucumber spear. Rub the mint sprig between your palms to express the natural oil, add it to the glass and serve with a straw.

**Rose water infused simple syrup is easy to make. All you need is 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of hot water and 1 tsp of rose water. Add the hot water to the sugar and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Then, add the rose water, cool to room temperature, and refrigerate the simple syrup until it’s ready to use.

If you are 21+ and live nearby, Mint Mutiny is on me this Saturday. If you’re 21+ and don’t live nearby, I’m sorry. But this drink is still worth making and sharing.

Heck, even if you don’t plan on taking part in Kentucky Derby activities this weekend, there are plenty of Mint Mutiny-worthy occasions coming up, including:

  • The last day of classes
  • College graduation
  • Backyard barbeques
  • Beach days
  • The weekend
  • The summer
  • Life

Just do yourself a favor and give Mint Mutiny a try. (And share the recipe while you’re at it!)

I’m calling for a #MintMutiny takeover.
